Steven R. Aragon, V. Paul Poteat, Dorothy L. Espelage, Brian W. Koenig
Journal of LGBT Youth
Vol. 11, Iss. 1, 2014

This article is about a study done on LGBTQ students and their educational environment. It says that LGBTQ students have lower grades, higher truancy rates, and a greater expectation to not finish high school than non-LGBTQ students. It cites victimization as a contributing factor to this trend.

I think this article provides a lot of data and information about this topic, which can be applied to most any school, including those in Rhode Island. It also suggests some changes to help resolve the issue.

2) Support for LGBTQ youth
The Lancet
The Lancet - 25 January 2014 ( Vol. 383, Issue 9914, Page 282 )

This article talks about a survey done in England. The study asked LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ youth about their mental health, and what it found was that the LGBTQ youth had much higher rates of suicidal thoughts and self harm than the non-LGBTQ youth.

This article provides some more perspective on the same sort of area as the first article. It gives data on the amount of kids that have mental health issues, and while the study was done in England, the data and ideas behind it can be applied everywhere.

3) (2014, October 13). Give schools the staffing they need. Toronto Star (Canada).

This essay talks about how teachers and school staff are the main problem facing LGBTQ students, and that in order to resolve the issue, the teachers and staff need to be properly trained. The author cites improper budget management as the source of the problem.

Yeah…basically, the teaching staff needs to take a stronger stand against discrimination, but they need to know how. Without the proper funding for training, this cannot happen.

4) Karaim, R. (2011, March 1). Gay Rights. CQ Global Researcher, 5, 107-132. Retrieved from http://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/

This article covers a wide variety of issues facing the LGBTQ community, such as the criminality of homosexual acts, legality of marriage, and social acceptance of homosexuality around the world. It talks a lot about the issue of marriage and what different countries and states are doing about it, whether it be punishing the or encouraging them.

This article provides a whole lot of background information about the way homosexuality and the LGBTQ community are perceived and interacted with around the world.

5) International Journal of Critical Pedagogy. LGBT and Allied Youth Responses to Cyberbullying: Policy Implications

This article describes a study conducted to see the impact of cyberbullying on LGBTQ students. The study found that LGBTQ students were not only more likely to be cyberbullied, but they were also less likely to tell an adult about it. The study also recommended solutions to help remedy the problem.

This article shows yet again the social challenges that LGBTQ students face on a daily basis.
